Help with understanding Ableton and other Music Production software?!?

Basically, I am wanting to start using ableton or similar but don’t really know how it works. Do you buy the software, such as Ableton and then have to buy all the sounds separately or does it come with all the sounds or just a few? My friend downloaded ableton but he says there are not many sounds etc to use. Also if you have to get them separately, where do you get them from?

Programs like Ableton come with a selection of sounds (samples, sound generators) and can also make use of additional 3rd party instruments (plugins) and samples.

Many of these additional sounds are free, just look for freeware VST instruments and you’ll find tons.

My favorite software for making music is FL Studio (Producer Edition). It basically is the same thing but looks different and has a different work flow. It’s important to judge the program for its work flow rather than the sounds it comes with as you can easily get more sounds but you can’t change the way a program works really, so try the demo and see what you like best: http://demo.flstudio.com
