George Benson – The Most Amazing Jazz Music Guitar Performer Ever – Part 1

Jazz guitar performer George Benson was born March 22, 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The precocious youngster found early on that he possessed a fine singing voice and in fact made his public debut at age four at a Fourth of July show, leading to his nickname – “Little Georgie Benson”. Hearing the jazz guitar recordings of jazz guitarist Charlie Christian with the Benny Goodman Band a few years later ignited his longing to perform on guitar. There were no collection books of jazz guitar tabs or jazz guitar tablature in those days for George to study and learn from. His stepfather, Tom Collier, who also had desires of performing on guitar professionally owned an electric guitar that the youthful George coveted. Because his hands were too little at that point however, he had to settle for an ukulele instead.

By the time he was eight, Benson was rewarded with a very inexpensive guitar by his stepfather who acknowledged his talent. A nearby talent scout noticed George’s talents after seeing him play guitar on street corners and drove him to New York city. At the age of ten, Little Georgie Benson was signed to a short term record contract with RCA Victor Record Company’s “X” label and recorded four sides of R&B music which included Ray Charles’s “It Should Have Been Me”. Only one single, “She Makes Me Mad”, was released and the event helped add to Benson’s notoriety back home, but his strict stepfather saw the whole thing as too much of a distraction and took George’s guitar away!

Perhaps the absence of a strong, worthwhile focus in his life had some effect. At age 15, Benson got in trouble with the police and served six weeks in reform school. Once he got out he joined the Altarrs, an R&B singing group put together by one of his cousins. Wishing to play the guitar once again and sing, his stepfather built George a do-it-yourself electric guitar and amplification system for his use. By 17, George Benson was singing and performing on guitar with the Altarrs and they became one of the most preferred groups in the region.

Inside of a year, Benson was itching to have his own band. He formed a quintet whose repertoire consisted just about completely of R&B songs, but he was beginning to grow a real interest in jazz. Listening to the album “Jazz Winds From a New Direction” that included jazz guitarist Hank Garland and vibraphonist Gary Burton spurred him on to further exploration. Before too long the recordings of Charlie Parker, Charlie Christian, and Wes Montgomery headed him in a new be-bop direction and he began passionately woodshedding on his guitar together with frequenting numerous jam sessions. Jazz guitarists like Grant Green and Eddie McFadden passing through Pittsburgh added their encouragement upon hearing his ability and intensity. In truth, fellow Pittsburghian Grant Green would go on to suggest that he try his hand at being a studio musician. Fortunately, for aspiring jazz guitarists George Benson has released several jazz guitar tab books that feature most of his recorded solos as well as instructional Dvds which teach his guitar techniques and harmonic concepts.

Christian Music’s Best: Worship $8.78 Christian Music’s Best: Pop, the complementary release to this one, Christian Music’s Best: Worship, samples Christian-oriented pop/rock with a variety of subject matter including the comfort that God can be when a romance turns sour. This album, on the other hand, is solely concerned with songs of praise directed to the Creator. “Your Grace Is Enough,” declares Chris Tomlin, and ten songs later, Bethany Dillon is asking, “How Great Is Our God.” Musically, however, a different inspiration is apparent on most of the songs. U2, while not a CCM band, has a Christian element, and many of the performers here clearly are in awe of the Irish group’s sound, particularly the Edge’s characteristic sequenced guitar sound. That sound is repeated in song after song, creating the appropriate anthemic effect. Kutlass breaks from this mold slightly on “Better Is One Day,” if only to go in a Creed/Nickelback direction. But it isn’t until the latter stages of the collection that the style really changes. Tim Hughes’ “Here I Am to Worship” is more of a string-filled ballad, and the big break comes with Hillsong Live’s “I Give You My Heart,” the first song to feature a female lead singer, which turns out to be a pop singalong, complete with live audience. Phillips, Craig & Dean provide harmonies on “You Are My King (Amazing Love),” and Dillon closes the proceedings with a hint of country. Magic Christian Music $13.58 If Badfinger’s debut album Magic Christian Music sounds patchy, there’s a reason why: It was assembled from three different sources. Although the title suggests that the record is a soundtrack to The Magic Christian it isn’t. It’s a hodgepodge, containing the group’s three contributions to the film, six highlights from the band’s pre-Badfinger album Maybe Tomorrow (released when they were known as the Iveys), an alternate take from Maybe Tomorrow, and four new songs. It’s little wonder that it doesn’t hold together, winding up as a document of Badfinger’s unharnessed potential. Since their breakthrough hit “Come and Get It” was written by Paul McCartney, Badfinger was dogged by comparisons to the Beatles but they were hardly copyists. Elements of the Hollies, the Kinks, and very mild psychedelia are discernable throughout Magic Christian Music, all part of the band’s search for their own voice. Apart from the lovely pop tune “Dear Angie” and Tom Evans’ stately, yearning “Maybe Tomorrow,” the Iveys numbers aren’t particularly distinguished pop but they are, by and large, pleasant period pieces. On the newer material, Badfinger sounds stronger and their craftsmanship surfaces. Pete Ham emerges as a fine songsmith, with the convincing rocker “Midnight Sun” and the gentle “Walk Out in the Rain.” Still, the true standouts among the newer songs are “Crimson Ship” and “Carry on Till Tomorrow,” both co-written by Ham and Evans. They’re two sides of the same coin – dreamy post-psych pop tunes driven by strong hooks and harmonies.
