World Beat Percussion
Why are drums (drumline, percussion) considered bad in some Christian churches?
At my Baptist church, the pastor, deacons, and the other leaders say that drums or any other percussion Instruments have no place in music. I agree somewhat: you wouldn’t want a hip-hop beat to a hymn. But then again, I think it’s a bit overboard. The church orchestra has no bass drums, snare drums, cymbals, timpani, etc, and to be honest it makes it seem a bit….empty? The percussion adds this feeling to a song, keeps the rhythm, and completes the orchestra. But the church says that drums make the music sound more “world-like” or sinful. What do you think? All answers are appreciated.
The pastors should be respected and obeyed in any particular assembly. As you know, music is a very subjective art and not everyone likes everything. In the church, scrutiny of the music is at a much higher level by both the pastors and the congregants. You can always attend a different worship serivice if you fell the need for a particulat kind of music.
I have this general opinion: If you cannot discern a noticeable difference between Christian music and the average stuff you hear then look somewhere else. The instruments do not matter. What is more important is the spiritual condition of the musicians. Remember, they are ministering, through music, the Word of God. The two should agree.
